Privacy Policy

This privacy policy explains how KanjiKam handles your information when you use the mobile and web applications.

Effective date

Last updated: 18 April 2026

1. Privacy-First Principle

KanjiKam (“we”, “us”, “our”) respects your privacy and is committed to protecting your personal data. KanjiKam is built with a privacy-first architecture:

  • Image recognition (OCR) is performed locally on your device.
  • Your images are not uploaded to our servers by default.
  • Your personal learning data is stored locally unless you explicitly enable sync.
  • We collect only the minimum data necessary to provide the Service.

2. What data we collect

2.1 Information You Provide

  • Email address.
  • Authentication credentials, securely handled via third-party auth providers.
  • Optional profile information, if you choose to provide it.

2.2 Automatically Collected Information

  • Device type and operating system.
  • App version.
  • Anonymous usage metrics, if enabled.

This technical data is not used to identify you personally.

3. Image and OCR Data

KanjiKam is designed to process images entirely on-device.

  • Photos you take or upload are processed locally.
  • We do not store, transmit, or access your images by default.
  • Extracted text such as kanji is stored locally unless sync is enabled.

If future features introduce cloud processing, this will always be opt-in only and clearly disclosed before use.

4. Local Storage of Learning Data

Your personal data, such as saved kanji, learning progress, and history, is stored locally on your device by default.

  • It remains fully under your control.
  • You can delete it at any time by uninstalling the app or clearing app data.

5. Optional Cloud Sync

If you enable an account and cloud sync, your learning data may be stored securely on our backend.

  • Data is encrypted in transit using HTTPS and protected at rest by our service providers.
  • We do not sell or share this data with third parties for advertising purposes.
  • You can disable sync at any time.

6. Payments and Subscriptions

For paid features, payments are handled by trusted third-party providers such as app stores or payment processors.

  • We do not store your full payment details.
  • We only receive the transaction confirmations needed to provide the Service.

7. Analytics

We aim to minimize analytics.

  • If analytics are used, they are anonymized and aggregated.
  • No tracking across other apps or websites is intended.
  • No advertising identifiers are used.
  • You may be given the option to opt out where applicable.

8. Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal data.

We only share data when necessary:

  • With service providers such as hosting and authentication partners under strict agreements.
  • To comply with legal obligations.

All partners are expected to follow strong data protection standards.

9. Data Retention

  • Local data is retained until you delete it.
  • Account data is retained while your account is active.
  • You may request deletion of account-related data at any time.

10. Your Rights (GDPR)

If you are in the European Economic Area, you may have the right to access your data, correct inaccurate data, delete your data, restrict or object to processing, and request data portability.

11. Security

We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures including HTTPS, secure authentication systems, minimal data storage, and a local-first architecture designed to reduce unnecessary exposure of personal data.

However, no system is completely secure.

12. Children's Privacy

KanjiKam is not intended for children under 13, or the applicable local age threshold. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. You will be notified of significant changes through the app or website where appropriate.
